Thanks to Apple, CD’s have become
obsolete in my Integra! Several weeks ago I completed a custom
iPod installation that taps into the car stereo. Like last years
Valentine One project, this was also a personal
brainchild of mine. Two of the biggest perks of this setup
include skip-free music and 1,000 songs of hand picked music at
your fingertips. My iPod mini is actually silver. As you
probably guessed, I added a little color to the homepage pictures
with Photoshop.
How it works: The iPod is securely
attached to the
armrest underside via the belt clip. I
fabricated the iPod
remote to fit the
empty slot adjacent to the e-brake. From the
iPod remote, a 7 foot
3.5mm-to-RCA
Monster adapter cable feeds
into the backside of the
Nakamichi CD-400 head unit. All wiring
is discreetly located underneath the center consol. The
remote
controls the track selection, pause feature and power, while the
volume can still be controlled via the head unit dial.
In order for this setup to work in your
car, you need a head unit that features an Auxiliary-In. The
final product is exactly how I had envisioned it from the
beginning – providing awesome convenience and functionality. For
more pictures and a detailed look into the fabrication process
of this project, check out this
Honda-Tech thread of mine.
Keep watch for next months detailed look
into weight reduction! |

The ITR Expo was,
again, an awesome experience! It began with the Chicago caravan
meeting at the Pancake House for breakfast on Thursday morning.
One of our crew drove all the way from California! From Chicago,
we headed out on our 500 mile journey to Beaver Run
Pennsylvania. Half the fun was simply
driving to the destination.
The highlights of the
trip included shooting aerial photography of the Type R group
picture, getting a ride in a supercharged NSX for a 30 min track
session and simply hanging out with the Chicago guys. Thanks to
Trey (the organizer and somehow a bigger Type R enthusiast than
myself) the entire event went off without a hitch! If you own an
ITR and did not attend – SHAME ON YOU.
Because I’m super lazy
the picture gallery has not yet been updated with pictures from
the event. However you can check out this
Honda-Tech post with the best shots. The Canon 10D SLR was
awesome for capturing the action shots on the track and from the
air.
Currently, I am working
on a custom install for the new IPod Mini. Check back soon to
see picture and details of this project. |

Special thanks to Dennis at
CBR Stereo
for your service! Since Nakamichi of Japan was extremely slow at
returning my
CD-400
head unit, Dennis went out of his way and sent me a new one from
his own inventory. Their customer service was above and beyond
what I expected – thank you! If you are considering purchasing
audio equipment for your car, this is the place.
The
2004 Integra Type R Expo is just a few days away! The
banquet will be Friday, July 23rd and the track session will be
Saturday July 24th at Beaver Run Pennsylvania. I will
have the Digital Canon 10D SLR. I’m working on recruiting the
same pilot for another round of aerial photography since last
year was so successful. The picture quality should be phenomenal
and will be posted here soon after the event concludes.
My Type R is running great with 76,000
miles. Several weeks ago I purchased a
Braille Auto lightweight battery through a honda-tech.com
group buy. This new generation lightweight battery is awesome.
The stock battery weighs 26 pounds and the Braille battery is
only 12 pounds! 14 pounds of weight savings from an already
lightweight car is always appreciated. The UPS box was so small
that I could not believe the battery was inside! Check out this
thread for more details and specifications until the
modification section is updated. |

Spring is finally here! The 2004 Integra
Type R Exposition will be held at Beaver Run Pennsylvania again
this year. The gathering will be July 23rd through the 24th.
It was so much fun last year I want to make sure everyone who
can attend will register ASAP. If you own a Type R and live in
the Midwest you have no excuse for not attending.
Besides it is only $36 for the banquet cost if you are not
racing! These are
pictures from last year’s event - world record gathering of
100 Type R's. Click here to visit
ITRCA.com and signup. It was great meeting many itrsport.com
fans last year and I hope to do the same this year.
The Type R is running great with the
exception of my
Nakamichi
CD-400 head unit (tear rolls down my face). It was having
problems playing CD’s, cutting in and out frequently.
Fortunately the one-year warranty is still good through
CBR Stereo
so I had it shipped back for repair. They were very helpful with
the return process. Hope it comes back soon since I have a
habitual tendency to turn up the volume only to remember there
is no CD player! I still love this CD player as long as it gets
fixed.
Currently I am doing freelance web design
and photography full time. If you are looking to construct a
website for personal or business use please contact me. I would
really appreciate your help if you can forward me some business!
Give me the details of what you have in mind and I can provide
an estimate. |

Thanks to Photoshop the site has been
updated with a new look! I’m also in the process of making the
site more polished and user-friendly. For example, there are now
custom pop-up windows for images. When you click a thumbnail (or
a link with a picture) the image will appear in the same browser
window. Click one of the thumbnails on the left for an example –
pretty cool, huh? Let me know if you like the new graphic scheme
or if you have any
suggestions for other improvements.
It has been full-fledged-winter here in Wisconsin so that rules
out working on the car. Fortunately I have the
Nokian winter
tires installed so getting through the snow has been no problem.
The Volks are sitting in the basement, waxed and ready for
spring. |

Integra
Type R #547 has reached the end of development. From performance
to appearance to audio upgrades this car has been customized to
my exact personal preference. Amazingly I am completely content
with the car in its current state. I never knew that the
“modification fever” would ever subside. Future expenses will be
simply maintenance related.
Once summer time rolls through I will be looking for a new
vehicle. There are a handful of affordable sports cars now on
the market. The two vehicles, in particular, that are in my
sights include the Mitsubishi Evolution Lancer and Subaru WRX
STI. The fact that they are so different from the Integra Type R
makes them appealing (AWD and Turbo Power). Do not worry - the
type R is not going anywhere. The Type R was my original dream
car, consequently it cannot be replaced – it’s a keeper! I wish
Honda would release a new hardtop sports car in the 30k range so
I could stay brand loyal. |

Just recently I replaced
my stock head unit with a
Nakamichi CD-400. This head unit is
excellent, period. Sound quality and clarity has been improved
significantly. Keep in mind that I already had aftermarket
speakers and an amplifier installed. This is why the sound
quality improvement has been so dramatic.
I am particularly impressed by the quality of the tuner on the
CD-400. The clarity of radio stations is much clearer. Not
surprisingly, this head unit allows the volume level to be
raised without distortion, well beyond the capabilities of the
stock unit. For example, in comparison to the stock head unit,
the CD-400 can extract more detailed midrange and more bass.
One of the handy features found on
this unit is the option to change from an
amber or
green
display. You can even mix and match by having the display green
with the buttons amber or vice-versa.
For a complete review on the Nakamichi head unit check out
this link
from the modification section. |

Thanks to eBay, I also replaced the
original steering wheel with
a used JDM Type R
Momo
steering wheel. This wheel is slightly
smaller and is also equipped with the SRS system. The stock
steering wheel was really the only part of the interior that I
did not care for much. The JDM wheel is more comfortable and
simply fits the attitude of the car's styling. The three spoke
design, smaller size, and the red stitching all help make the
interior of the vehicle more cosmetically pleasing. |

On Saturday night I received a one hour
ride in my favorite car of all time! A
1992 Ferrari F40! Quick overview – the entire vehicle is
hand constructed and is comprised almost entirely of carbon
fiber and kevlar. It heart is a 478 HP twin turbocharged V8. The
F40 will rocket to sixty mph in 3.8 seconds and the top speed is
201 mph.
The owner has been an acquaintance/friend of mine for several
years. On Saturday night I crossed paths with him at the local
burger hangout, as I often do. During our conversation I
enthusiastically said, “I’d love to get a ride in your car some
day”. He smiled and said, “I’m going to head downtown and check
out the Harley Davidson crowd. You are welcome to come along.”
There’s no way I can accurately explain in words what went
through my mind at that instant. It was simply hard to believe I
was finally going to get a ride in this amazing car.
So at about 12:15 A.M. I carefully crawled into the passenger
seat. Since the car is so low, you need to strategically “fall” into the seat. When standing next the car the
top of the vehicle comes up to about my belly button (44.3
inches to be exact).
Once the door was closed and my seat belt was latched we
proceeded to leave the parking lot. I must have been pretty
excited since I remember having tunnel vision before the car
even started moving! Fortunately my vision came back to normal…
at least for a couple minutes while we “taxied” the F40 to the
downtown expressway entrance ramp.
During this time I was able look around the
cabin and observe Italian design first hand. As expected, the
interior is simple and free from instrument clutter. There’s no
radio, no door handles (cable actuated), and no upholstery
covering the beautiful carbon fiber doors. This is a street
legal race car and all items that do not make the car faster are
not included.
While admiring the dash, I took note of the deeply recessed
green glowing gauges. This characteristic made it impossible for
me to see the max speed on the speedo from the passenger seat.
However, I was mesmerized by the universal logo for BOOST in a
gauge just right of the steering wheel. At the 12 o’clock
position on this gauge I see the number “12” indicating twelve
pounds of boost! I’m thinking, “oh my, 12 pounds of boost on a
V8!” Then I tilt my head over slightly to get a better view - my
eyes widen even more when I see the number “22” at the 3 o’clock
position!
Several moments later we approach the clover shaped downtown
entrance ramp. We stopped momentarily at the yield sign to let a
few underpowered vehicles in front of us get out of or way. Then
we were off! With the sifter in first the F40 surged forward and
quickly made its way around the bend. The car stayed flat
without any noticeable body roll. Just prior to merging, Jim
aggressively gets on the gas. I glance over at the boost gauge
and see the needle quickly surpassing 12 pounds. My body is
pinned back into the deep Kevlar seat. The trust of the
acceleration was breathtaking! The massive rear tires begin to
spin and Jim nonchalantly counter steers back and forth to keep
the car going straight. He then shifted gears and the exciting
procedure was repeated.
I was a bit surprised to experience the progressive power of the
turbo engine to be remarkably smooth. The huge twin turbo’s give
the impression there is a jet engine thrusting you forward. Even
with a race suspension the drive downtown was not uncomfortable.
The carbon fiber body provided a unique road feel unlike steel
frames. The loudest element of the car was the brakes. They are
extremely loud, especially just prior to a stop light. The high
pitch screeching sound you hear at the train station is almost
identical to the sound made by the F40’s ceramic rotors and
carbon brake pads. If the eye popping red paint on this low
slung Ferrari did not catch people’s attention then the brakes
did the job.
Our trip took us to the lake front and then back through the
busy downtown streets of Milwaukee. Even though it was after
midnight the streets were packed with people because of the 100
year Harley Davidson anniversary. During our visit with the F40
we temporarily stole the show from the bikers. Jim, the owner,
is a kid at heart and would regularly stomp on the gas! In
addition he would race ANYBODY, even if it was some 16 year old
in his Cavalier who wanted to run.
I have NEVER seen a vehicle that gets this much attention (and
so it should with a sticker price exceeding $400,000). Nearly
everyone would turn, smile, and point at you.
The most memorable part of the trip was downtown, while when we
stopped at a red light (first row) between two outside
restaurants. Dozens of people were lining both sites of the
street just walking, mingling or eating. Nearly everyone turned
their head to gawk at the car. Of course I was looking up at
everyone, grinning ear to ear. You could hear a bunch of people
compliment the car or just give you thumbs up.
One individual Harley owner with long hair, big grey beard, and
a leather jacket soon stood out from the crowd. He started
yelling, “Light ‘em up!” And while doing so he kept walking
closer and closer. Soon this big guy was in the middle of the
one way street just outside my door. I was a little
uncomfortable but not worried. He said, “there are guys here
with $50,000 Harley’s that have done burn outs so you can do it
too” This guy would was on a mission, on a mission to instigate
breaking the law (I did not object to this idea).
Moments later the light turns green and it felt like I was
launched off an air craft carrier. There was no smoke just
acceleration. We reached about 80 mph in an instant and all I
saw were the blurred images of parked cars whizzing by on both
sides of the street. We were doubling the speed limit in a blink
of an eye. Although there was no smokey burnout I was sure that
the persistent Harley rider and crowed were entertained.
It was a great experience to ride in such a famous and already
classic Ferrari. It’s too bad that I did not have my camera
along. |

The Type R has gone through many changes recently. The last few
modifications I have done were not appreciated so something had
to be done. The
Mugen suspension has been removed and the stock suspension
has been reinstalled. Quite frankly, the Mugen lowdowns did
poorly over bumpy roads. I was sick of getting my butt (and car)
rocked by expansion joints and rough roads.
The next item that was changed were the Pirelli Pzero Nero
Tires. These tires sucked, period. Even though they are
categorized as a max performance tire they were a major
disappointment. The primary problem with this tire is the soft
sidewalls. This characteristic produced an extremely poor
steering response. Thankfully
Tire Rack,
through the permission of Pirelli, allowed me to receive a full
refund on these tires. I replaced the Pzero Nero tires with
another set of
Pzero Asimmetricos. Wow, I love this tire!
Onto some positive things... Now that I have
tools and a garage I've been doing all the maintenance on my
vehicle. I must say that working on your own car is that way to
go. The oil has been changed, new Axxis Ultimate brake pads are
installed and I even put on a set of
smoke turn signals. Fortunately I'm very happy with these
new additions. These brake pads, in particular, are fantastic!
They are much better than the Axxis Metal Masters I was
previously using.
The investment
section has received a new color key addition. Adjacent to
each modification is either a green, yellow, or red dot. These
dots illustrate which modifications are good and which ones are
not so good. Placing the cursor on each dot will display a brief
product rating explanation. Clicking the dots will open a
picture of that product. This color key should be a very handy
feature for quick reference. |

Wow, long-time-no-update! Here are the main
scoops... College is OVER! I graduated from
Taylor University
last month with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Business/Systems. I am now back in Milwaukee Wisconsin living
with my brother Chris. This is very cool because, reason #1 – I
don’t need to “live with my parents” and reason #2 -
this is our driveway! The E46 M3 and S2k are my brothers.
Okay, enough about me, huh? What’s new with the R? Well I’m
ecstatic to say that my ITR is looking better than ever. The
entire front end and the rear bumper have been repainted. After
three years of many hwy miles the car was showing its age. So
the new paint and fresh wax has it looking nearly showroom
perfect once again. This is the
reflection of the house off the hood, yes that’s a
reflection. A couple other shots of the car (1)
(2).
Several days ago I installed a manual switch for the antenna.
Here’s a
picture of where the switch was placed. S&M Racing has a
great DIY write-up about this project.
Check out this link if you are interested in doing the
conversion to your Integra. |

Lots of new things to report! First and foremost, the 2003 Type
R Expo was a huge success. I doubt it's possible to fit more fun
and excitement into one weekend. The most memorable was probably
my
plane trip
to photograph over
100 Type R's on the Beaver Run race track.
Pictures from the event will be posted in the gallery soon.
Check out this
Honda-Tech post with a few of my sample pictures.
Here is a short video from the Expo, created by
Evan Panek.
Right click and choose "Save Target As" (2003
Expo Teaser)
My car is now faster, thanks to a new
Comptech 4-2-1
stainless steel header. Top end power and especially the
midrange is noticeably improved. This new header is about one
third the weight of the heavy stock cast header. I strongly
recommend this modification if you want your Integra to make
more power. New
Pzero Nero tires have also been installed a couple days ago. |

During spring break I found a great deal on a slightly used
Mugen Lowdown suspension. Here are a few pictures from the
previous owners vehicle (1
2
3
4). This kit lowers the Type R exactly 3/4 of an inch and
has a 5 way adjustable dampening system.
The suspension has
been on my car for about a week. The car definitely eats up the
corners faster. High speed cornering is confident with nearly
all body roll eliminated. Shock dampening is currently set to 2
at the front and slightly stiffer in the rear at the 3 (1 soft /
5 hard). The 2003 ITR
Exposition is one week away! One hundred and fifty Type R's
are scheduled to attend this record breaking event at Beaver Run
raceway in Pennsylvania. Pictures and video will be posted right
here following the event. |

Today marks the third year since I took delivery of Type R
#547 back in February of 2000! Last week it received the 60k
mile scheduled tune-up. The car continues to run perfect with no
mechanical problems. There may be some new additions in the
spring but I am still considering my options. A replacement set
of Pirelli Pzero tires through Tire Rack will be a priority
item. |

This weekend my brother and I drove down to the Chicago Auto
Show. Our two hour trip from Milwaukee in the M3 was half the
fun (1,000 miles on the odometer - almost time to let her rip!).
Here's a
picture from our drive home.
I took over 100 pictures during our three hour visit. My
favorite dream machine was the
Enzo Ferrari. The
Subaru STI gets my vote the best performing affordable
vehicle. You can find several dozen shots of my favorite rides
in the gallery
under the "Auto Shows" section. |

The “Ultimate Driving Machine” has been added to the family!
My Brother purchased a new
2003 BMW M3 coupe. The best part was that he let me take
delivery while he was at work! I had the opportunity to drive it
for about 100 miles this past weekend. The car is phenomenal in
every respect, from
performance to
appearance to
luxury. The break in period is 1,250 miles so I can not
give any impressions of its true brute power yet. However, with 333 horse
power and a blistering zero to sixty mph time of 4.8 seconds it will be
scary fast. Be sure to visit the
gallery for a
great collection of pictures of the M3. |
| |
Happy New Year! During the holidays I took several new
pictures from the drivers perspective. Using a
camera mount and a delayed shutter exposure I was able to
capture some interesting pictures. This
one in particular is my favorite. Check out the
gallery for
other examples. I think these shots do a excellent job of
capturing the excitement and essence of driving the Type R.
After 56,000 miles traveled my Integra has sipped away over
2,000 gallons of 92+ octane gasoline. It sounds like a lot of
fuel but with an amazing 28 miles per gallon average it's much
less than most vehicles on the road. You can visit the
fuel economy section
for more details. |

The 2003 Integra Type R Exposition is scheduled for April
12th and 13th. This event will be held at the Beaver Run
Motorsports Complex in Pennsylvania. Nearly 100 Type R’s are
already scheduled to attend, which will make this the largest
Type R gathering in North America. More information and
registration forms can found at the
official
itrexpo site. With the great memories from the
previous ITR Expo, I am excited for yet a larger showing
this coming spring. |

The 2 year old Olympus C-3030 digital camera that was used to
capture images for the gallery has been replaced by the new
C-5050 5.0 mega pixel predecessor. Here is a
link to a
sample shot of a Mercedes SL 500 I captured while out on the
road. I have no idea who the occupants are but the big
(surprised) smile of the lady passenger is priceless! Other
sample pictures have been posted in the
gallery, under
the section titled "miscellaneous". |

The Chicago
Honda-Tech BBQ was a blast! Last weekend a few friends and I
drove down to Chicago (from Milwaukee) to meet with
fellow Honda enthusiasts. The weather was fantastic and it
was fun finally meeting a bunch of the guys from the message
board. There were six Type R's and tons of
nicely equipped civics, some with engine swaps. Pictures have
been posted in the
gallery under the "Meet" section. |

The
2002 ITR Exposition
is almost
here! It will be held at Gingerman Raceway from May 26th through May 28th.
As it stands now, I am not registered to race but I plan on being there Monday
and Tuesday to observe and converse with other Type R owners. If you have
a Type R I hope you can attend this year. Hope to see you there! |

I installed the rear Mugen
upper strut tower bar, sorry no pictures yet. It looks fantastic and more
importantly the bar is extremely rigid. The rear Mugen bar weighs 3 pounds
9 ounces, however the solid construction makes it seem heavier. I need some
time to get a feel for the improvement. There are few twisty freeway ramps
and good corners here in the cornfields of Indiana compared to Milwaukee.
The front Mugen strut tower bar should arrive next week. |
| |
Spring break begins this
Friday and I cannot wait! I'm looking forward to spending some time with
my friends back at home in Milwaukee. Two of my buddies had their cars stored
for the winter (a Type R and 5th Gen. Prelude). They will be taking them
out of storage when I arrive so that will be exciting. My Type R could use
a break on the occasional Friday night since they have been bumming rides
off me all winter. :)
The Mugen strut tower bars I ordered are being shipped from Japan. I am hoping
they will arrive in time to have them installed by the first of April. In
other news, I made an appointment to get my brothers S2000's suspension adjusted
next week at King Motorsports. The car is currently sitting too low with
the Mugen N-Zero suspension, however the car looks wicked rolling down the
street with no fender/tire gap. I'll try to get some before and after pictures.
We are looking into some aftermarket wheels for the S2K. Volk recently released
a 17 inch version of the CE-28N wheel that is made specifically for the S2000.
Apparently the CE-28N's weigh a bit less than TE-37's. Titanium colored CE-28N's
wrapped in Potenza S0-3's are a likely candidate for a new wheel tire
combination.
I have been doing quite a bit of driving the last few weekends, especially
at night. The xenon HID high and low beam lights are still quite entertaining.
The R is running strong and never fails to gets the adrenalin flowing when
the tachometer approaches the 8,400 rpm redline. I'm impressed that car still
"feels" fast after two years. I went out driving with a friend last night
and did some enthusiastic driving. While merging onto the interstate, in
third gear, I unintentionally got the rpm's up to an indicated 8,900! Wow,
that's the deepest the needle has sunk into the red zone. Surprisingly the
motor was still producing impressive power with the rpm's that high. |
| |
|
I ordered Mugen front and
rear upper strut tower bars. I purchased this set for 20% off retail - a
deal that I could not pass up. These are the most rigid strut tower bars
available. The front Mugen bar will replace the slightly less rigid stock
strut tower brace. The Type R does not come standard with a rear strut tower
bar. |

Surpassed
40,000 miles today. |

The second set of Philips
HID lights have arrived. They have replaced my aftermarket halogen PIAA high
beam bulbs (9005). Night visibility has been dramatically improved. Light
output is easily 2-3 times brighter than the stock halogens. If you are
interested in purchasing a Philips HID kit for your Integra you may contact
Trevor
from
www.visualdynamics.ca
for more
information. |

|
My brother's S2000 had the
Mugen N-Zero suspension kit installed a few weeks ago. The car has been lowered
1.25 inches from the stock ride height. This is a bit too low so eventually
the car will be raised up about 1/4 of an inch. I'm surprised by how comfortable
the suspension rides with the car so low. Currently the rebound/compression
is adjusted to the middle setting which is 157/77 - Front and 179/85 - Rear.
This is a good compromise between performance and everyday driving practicality. |

I went racing last weekend
and ironically the Type R stayed at home. A frozen lake and summer Pzero
tires don't mix so I took the AWD Audi Allroad instead. A few friends and
I traveled to Lake Sinissippi in Hustisford, WI for the racing. The event
was held by W.A.G. (Wisconsin Autosports Group). The racing style is comparable
to an Autocross - cones mark the coarse, cars run one at a time, and vehicles
are separated into different classes.
Most of the day we were out in the middle of the lake doing our own thing.
With no "apparent" laws governing our actions we tried just about anything
and everything you could only dream of doing on an ice/snow covered parking
lot. The list includes drag racing high speed e-brake turns and more doughnuts
than you could count. Once I removed the ABS and ESP (Electronic Stability
Program) fuses the Allroad was a blast to drive. The ESP is an impressive
innovation that makes the car almost impossible to spin. The electronics
within the car achieve this task by automatically braking the wheels that
start spinning. While this technology makes it very safe to drive on slippery
roads it was a party pooper on the lake so I disabled it for the day - problem
solved. |

I added the "Type R Buying
Guide" article to the
reviews section. This article came
from Evo Magazine. My visit to the Detroit Auto Show was enjoyable. I have
been to the Chicago Auto Show the last several years but this was my first
trip to Detroit. A few of my favorite cars on display were the Porsche GT2
Lamborghini Murcielago Nissan Skyline and the slightly redesigned NSX. It's
unfortunate that Acura neither had the Integra Type R or RSX Type R on display. |

Thanksgiving break was fantastic!
I managed to clock over 1,500 miles during the first 20 days of November.
I now have new front and rear speakers in my car powered by a 4-channel Amp.
The front speakers are 6.5 inch component M5 Diamond Audio's and the rear
speakers are 6.5 inch Boston Acoustic RX67's. The Amp is a 4 x 40 Eclipse.
I'm still currently using the stock head unit. The Amp was installed under
the passenger seat and the speakers are concealed with the factory speaker
covers so everything appears to be stock - very cool. I had the sound system
installed by a Milwaukee audio shop called Stay Tuned. I'll try to take some
pictures of the Amp and speakers soon. The quality of the high and midrange
audio has been dramatically improved compared to the stock paper speakers.
The bass is noticeably louder and more precise too.
My friend Dave and I weighed our cars at a local quarry. My 2000 ITR with
AC was 2,560 pounds and Dave's 1998 ITR without AC weighed in at a scant
2,520 pounds. We both had about 3 gallons of fuel remaining in our tanks.
These numbers seem very accurate but they could be 50 to 100 pounds optimistic
on the light side. |

I have been busy with exams
so there have been only a few minor updates - the fuel economy section and
photo archive. My car needs another oil change soon. When I'm home for
Thanksgiving I will go with Mobile 1 synthetic again. There is a good possibility
that my Type R will have ANOTHER set of Philips HID's by Christmas. I'm going
to install this second set in my high beams. The low beam HID's have been
such a great addition for both functionality and appearance I would like
to complete the package. Humm, I wonder where the second set of ballasts
should be installed? |

Fall break begins NOW and
just in time for my 23rd Birthday! Tomorrow will mark the 3rd year this site
has been attracting Integra fans - over 178,000 visitors to be exact. The
Photo archive is getting revamped with frames to accommodate more images.
It will not be finished for a week or more so do not freak out if the photo
archive links are inactive!
An itrsport.com fan by the name of Brian was gracious enough to set me up
with additional sever space. The videos will not be hosted their due to the
large bandwidth requirement but his server will allow me to post more images
and expand this site in the near future. Thanks Brian! |

A picture of my Type R ranked
second place in the Olympus
Lights Spectacular
photo contest. This contest actually concluded last
winter but I was unaware of this achievement until just a couple days ago.
Ironically, a friend recognized this picture on the official Olympus web
site and notified me. |
| |
|
The odometer just rolled
over
30,000 miles yesterday and
the R is running STRONG. On my last tank of gas (11.2 gallons) I was able
to travel 377 miles. This equates to over 33 MPG, edging out the old record
by a small margin.
Last week I initiated a rolling drag race with a late model BMW M3. The M3
was a 4 door, 97-99 model year, with the 3.2 liter 240 HP motor. To make
a long story short, my ITR was able to creep forward a foot or two before
the M3 backed down. The ITR was never intended to be a strait line racer
but its ability to hang with an M3 is impressive!
I have decided to switch to Mobil 1 synthetic oil. The extra cost for synthetic
seems worth the benefits. Several days after my next oil change I'll report
any noticeable short term changes. Since the start, my car has been using
Castrol GTX 5w30. |

Last night, on my way home
from a friend's apartment, I had an astonishing interaction. While waiting
at a stop light in my Type R, a complete stranger, on a Honda motorcycle,
pulls up next to my car. He looks over at me (my windows were down) and says,
"Hey! Are you the guy with the web site on the Internet?" (The tunes from
the Twilight Zone TV show began echoing through my mind) Apparently this
non Integra owner came across my site in the past and then recognized my
car. Wow, that's really crazy stuff. The funny thing is that this is the
second time someone has remembered my car from the Net. I had almost the
same situation occur last summer. To sweeten the deal for visitors of this
site I just instated "The ITRSPORT.COM Challenge." Check out the details
below the menu bar.
Saturday afternoon I went to Chicago with some Subaru buddies of mine to
an
I-Club
BBQ. With over 30 Imprezas
attending, many of them WRX's, it was an enjoyable experience. DiscoStu (Mike)
gave me a ride down to Chicago in his Red WRX. |

The S2000 has successfully
made it through the break in period. With over 800 miles on the odometer
I have had the opportunity to take the rev's up to the 9000 rpm redline.
The gear ratios are noticeably longer than the Type R's. This characteristic
makes it difficult to experience VTEC in any gear other than first and not
exceed the speed limit in a very short period. Similar to the Type R, power
delivery is smooth and progressive. The S2k has virtually no body roll, allowing
for confident high speed cornering.
After several weeks of use, the Philips HID kit is still working flawlessly.
I purchased a set of PIAA Superwhite 9005 high beam replacement bulbs to
compliment the HID driving lights.
Options Auto Salon
offers these
lights for the lowest price I could find on the Internet at $54 a set. They
should arrive early next week. |
| |
This Philips HID kit was
a snap to install. All you need is about 30 minutes and your Teg is Xenon
equipped. Night time visibility is impressive and much better than the stock
halogens. The modification section has been updated with many pictures and
a couple videos.
My brother's S2000 now has over 400 miles on the odometer. He already purchased
a new sounds system, which includes MB Quart door speakers, a 10 inch Infinity
subwoofer, and a four channel Alpine AMP. I've been lucky to get a couple
hours of seat time behind the wheel. We are keeping the rev's low so I can't
yet report how the top end power feels. |
| |
The S2000 has arrived! Check
out the photo archive to see pics of this car when my brother took delivery.
It's going to be a long 600 mile break in period before we test out the straight
line performance of the S2000. The cornering stability of this car is amazing.
I really like the short throw shifter, small steering wheel, and ergonomic
interior controls.
My friend Dave and I both ordered Philips HID Xenon kits for our TypeR's.
They should be installed by next weekend. If you would like to purchase one
of these HID kits for your Integra visit
visualdynamics.ca
Trevor, the
owner of this business, is willing to offer itrsport.com visitors these kits
for only $490 (retail is $600). Visit the modification page for more information
about these Xenon lights. Once we get these kits installed I'll write a product
review. |

A new Honda automobile will
be joining our Family shortly. My brother just purchased a silver S2000.
The car is scheduled to be ready for deliver by the end of July. |

A new
extensive technical section
discussing the Type R's unique mechanical components and design
has been added. Become an Integra Type R expert and learn what makes the
limited production Type R the best performing Integra ever produced. |
| |
|
Booo Yah! The Type R has
been transformed with these new wheels and tires. Not only does the car achieve
higher cornering speeds and demonstrate razor sharp steering response but
these wheels make the car look entirely different. After driving around on
the 205/45/16 Pzero tires the stock 195/55/15 RE010's feel undersized in
comparison. |
| |
|
The Volk TE-37 wheels and
Pzero tires went on the car this past weekend! Cornering, breaking, and even
acceleration have been noticeably improved. |
| |
|
The Chicago Type R meet generated
a successful turnout! A total of 15 ITR's attended (6 PY, 5 CW, and 4 FP). |
| |
|
Finally I received information
regarding the arrival of my Volk TE-37 wheels from Japan. The shop owner
said they are "scheduled in for sure" at the California distributor May 10th.
This means they should be delivered to my local shop in Wisconsin by the
15th of this month. After three months of waiting I'm definitely ready see
these wheels on the car. |

This site can now be accessed
through www.itrsport.com. The "itr" stands for Integra Type R and "sport"
is simply an easy noun to remember. This will allow people to access the
page without typing the long members.aol.com address. The site will still
be hosted by AOL so both addresses will continue to be active.
A
reviews section has been added
to the menu! If you enjoy reading popular magazine articles about the Type
R this is a great place to visit. Eventually I would like to have all of
the ITR reviews and articles indexed here. |

Lots of news and updates!
Easter break was virtually non stop auto activities. Last Friday I visited
Great Lakes Dragaway
for a night of fun racing with my friend Aaron.
Two of my best runs were 14.9 sec @ 95 mph. My fastest 60 foot time was 2.29
seconds. Considering this was my first trip to the drag strip with the R
these times seem respectable.
Friday night continued with a bit of driving on the strip in Dave's 98 ITR
We surprised the rest of the guys when Dave and I went back to his place
and picked up his brother's canary yellow Audi S4 for a few laps on the hwy.
I'm still kicking myself for not bringing my camera. While driving in the
S4 we joined up with Mr. Fuchs in his Ferrari F40! It's one thing to see
this vehicle parked in a showroom but to see it accelerate full throttle
multiple times is spectacular.
Saturday night consisted of a trip to Madison Wisconsin with my friend Ben
in his turbocharged Nissan SE-R Sentra. The motor within is a VSpec Bluebird
motor that produces 310 HP at 15lbs of boost ! This night I had my video
camera ready for the action and it paid off. We went up against about one
dozen very fast cars including two 5.0 Mustangs and several imports spraying
an unhealthy dose of NOS. Unfortunately for them, they were all beaten by
the SE-R!
On a side note, the video links in the Video and Audio section have been
fixed. Thanks to those of you who alerted me to this problem. |

Spring Break begins tomorrow!
The weather was absolutely wonderful the last two days. The snow is long
gone with the temperature staying in the upper 50's. I'm finally able to
roll down the windows and enjoy the fresh spring air! Still no word yet on
the Volk TE-37's from the shop owner. It would be fantastic if the wheels
arrived when I'm back home in Milwaukee. Realistically they should be on
the car within one month from now. |
| |
|
Snow storm in Indiana? It
looks like we could have more than 4 inches of snow before the day is over.
The stock RE010's work better in these slippery conditions than I had
anticipated. |
| |
On Friday I purchased a set
of Pirelli PZero (asymmetrical) tires from Tire Rack to go with my new Volk
TE-37's. This combination is one of the lightest available. The 16" TE-37's
weigh a scant 11.2 pounds and the 205/45/16 PZero tires are approximately
18.8 pounds each. With air pressure this duo will weigh in at just over 30
pounds. For comparisons purposes an average 16" wheel and tire combo will
weigh anywhere from 40 - 45 pounds.
The Pirelli PZero is a serious performance tire found on several high end
sports cars. This tire is factory equipment on the Lamborghini, Ferrari and
the Porsche 911 Turbo. The PZero has a tread wear of 140AA and a lifespan
of probably only 15,000 to 20,000 miles. The PZero's are comparable to the
stock RE010's in terms of of handling and wear but the Pirelli PZero's sacrifice
a bit more wet traction grip and hydro resistance for maximum dry traction.
Ride comfort and road noise are very acceptable for a max performance tire. |

I met a fellow Type R owner
who lives in the Milwaukee area. Dave, a new owner of a 98 Type R, discovered
my web site and noticed I lived nearby. After a couple of e-mails and a phone
call we decided to meet up at a restaurant. We both had a great time and
even took some pictures.
Earlier today I had my local Acura dealership perform the 15k tune up on
my Type R. Since this procedure takes several hours the dealership gave me
a 2001, automatic, LS Integra as a loner. The base model Integra is a nice
car but it sure does not compare to the Type R in terms of performance. |
| |
|
After months of consideration
I went ahead and ordered a set of 16 inch Volk TE-37's. They have a 42mm
offset and are gunmetal color. Since they needed to be special ordered from
Japan it may take up to 60 days for them to arrive.
Today I also had my car's emissions tested. Strangely, the individuals who
work at these facilities always seem lack any knowledge of the automobiles
they are trained to test. After getting out of my car, just before the testing,
the 50 year old guy had to ask me some questions. First, he needed to record
the mileage on the odometer and the displacement of the motor. So, I told
him 15k on the odometer and I said it is a 1.8 liter motor. Then he proceeded
to ask, "is it a six cylinder?" I guess he did not want to insult me since
the car does look sporty but I don't know of many 1.8 liter V6 or I-6 motors
in existence today (except the 1.8 liter V6 Mazda MX-3). That was quite comical
but what topped off the conversation (and his apparent lack of basic car
knowledge) was when he asked if my car was an Acura Legend. Okay, that put
a shiver down my spine knowing that he was going to preform the emission
test. You would think that the huge spoiler and big INTEGRA TYPE R stickers
would give him a hint.
And yes, my car passed the emission test. Quite a relief! What are the chances
that a one year old, completely stock Honda would pass? (Sarcasm) I have
the vehicle inspection report right here in front of me but for some reason
the actual readings for HC, CO, NOx are not recorded. |
| |
|
I'm impressed by the looks
of the new RS-X. What intrigues me the most about this car is the fact that
the design is conservative yet still eye catching proving an aggressive stance.
I have not yet seen the RS-X prototype in person. If the production version
looks as good as it does in these photos I know it will be a successful launch
for Honda. The Type R version of the RS-X, if ever produced, should arrive
within a couple years. Other new contenders in the RS-X's price range include
the Subaru WRX and 2002 Nissan Z. |
| |
|
|
The concept version of the
next generation Integra, named the RS-X, was unveiled yesterday at the Detroit
Auto Show. Acura dealerships should start receiving the production version
of the RS-X this summer. |

Happy New Year everyone!
Lot's of news and additions on the way. For starters I updated the
fuel economy section
I have technical
information in the works that compares the Integra B series motors and their
respective fuel economy characteristics. The
photo archive
has been slightly
revised, with new photos and some text only hyperlinks to speed up download
time. Several of the images include photoshop art work I created over Christmas
break. I also added five high resolution photos (1280 x 960) for those of
you who wanted large images for computer wallpaper.
Many of you may be surprised to discover I replaced the AEM cool air intake
with the stock intake system. After removing the system it was apparent that
the CAI provided no noticeable performance benefit for the Type R. Despite
the nice growl of the AEM during high revving, noise production during highway
cruising speed was too obnoxious. Check out the modification section in a
few days to read a full report regarding this decision.
My request for lots of snow was granted from mother nature in order to make
my snow tires worthwhile. Wisconsin had a record 50 inches of snow for the
month of December. The Hakkapeliitta Q snow tires did a great job of providing
traction to keep me on the road. Unlike the experience with my previous GS-R
Integra with factory all season tires the Type R showed no sign of getting
stuck, even with 4 to 6 inches of snow covering the road. I'll write a product
review for these tires soon. |
| |
|
Yesterday this site surpassed
50,000 visits since its creation back in of October of 98! Special thanks
to those of you who are regular visitors. |
| |
|
The Hakkapeliitta Q snow
tires have been installed. All I can say is that there better be a lot of
snow this winter to make these things useful. Equipping the Type R with snow
tires sure takes the fun out of enthusiastic driving. Simply changing lanes
feels different and slightly uncomfortable due to the sidewall flex of these
tires. Acceleration, cornering, and breaking are clearly handicapped with
this type of rubber on dry pavement. I have not yet had the opportunity to
drive on snow covered roads. You can view two images of these tires
here
and
here
Have you ever seen a dirty Type R before? Not on this site, until now. Take
a look at some
pre
and
post
car wash pictures to see the difference. Thanksgiving weekend was the first
time in several weeks I had a few hours to give the R a wash.
|
| |
|
|
I scheduled an appointment
with
Big Bear Tire of Oconomowoc, WI
to have snow tires fitted to my Type R. The owner of the shop advised me
to go with the
Hakkapeliitta Q tire design
manufactured by a Norwegian company called
Nokian Supposedly these
tires offer superb snow and ice traction while still maintaining decent dry
pavement performance. I'm going to have these tires mounted on my stock wheels.
Total cost for tires, mounting, and balancing will run about $450.00 with
tax included. Keep an eye open for pics and a review on these tires in the
near future. |

The December issue of
Sport Compact Car is already
on magazine stands! You can read a scanned version of the SCC Webside
review of this site here.
Last weekend was my first vacation from college in over a month. I was finally
able to escape the small farm town of Upland Indiana and visit my family
and friends back in Milwaukee, WI. After several weeks of mostly exams and
papers, car stuff was at the top of my agenda. The highlight of my extended
weekend was a ride in a friends
328 GTS Ferrari. Yes, that is me
in the pic. Wow, this car performs! With 270 HP on tap the acceleration of
the 328 GTS is comparable to an NSX. The distinctive exhaust rumble of this
car is simply music. While in Milwaukee I also took some new photos of the
ITR. |
| |
Good news! My web site is
scheduled to appear in the December 2000 issue of Sport Compact Car's "Webside"
column. Marc Stengel, the author of Webside, notified me earlier this week.
Earlier today I had the opportunity to ride in a 99' Formula Firebird (305
HP). This was the first time I've experienced a drive in one of these vehicles.
I was curious to determine if the brute power of this Pontiac automobile
would make my ITR less attractive. Fortunately this did not happen.
First impressions: These cars are HUGE! It's kinda like driving a boat on
wheels. This characteristic of the car makes me appreciate the visibility
and razor sharp road feel of the ITR. Yes, the Firebird was noticeably quicker
than my Type R but this acceleration was not knock your socks off impressive
as I had assumed. Personally, I don't care for the Firebird styling, particularly
on the inside. Pontiac interiors all seem to have shoddy design layouts.
Conclusion: The Ram Air Firebird is a sweet car with great performance however
it does not mach the "driving excitement" offered by the Type R. |

The eBay auctions for my
used GS-R Comptech Exhaust and Akimoto Intake successfully concluded. I've
been considering purchasing a Valentine One radar/lazer detector with the
auction money. It would be great to have but because it costs $400 and since
I have never received a speeding ticket it would probably not be the best
use of my money. My old $80 Uniden detector has been working fine and has
saved me many times from getting a ticket. I'll probably use the money for
new snow tires this winter. I took several new images of the Type R in northern
Wisconsin during the 4th of July weekend. |
| |
|
|
The
AEM intake
has arrived and is already installed! The increased intake noise is minimal
below 5,700 rpm but when the VTEC switch occurs the engine noise begins to
boom. If you like noise during enthusiastic driving this intake takes the cake.
|
| |
|
The fog lights and security
system have been installed. I'm very satisfied with the factory fog lights
since they compliment the cars appearance and provide improved night visibility.
I would suggest these to any Integra owner over aftermarket lights since
they are designed for the car. |
| |
|
I placed an order through
A&H Motorsports for a security
system, AEM intake, and factory fog lights. Their prices were considerably
lower than my local Acura dealership. Once I'm done with exams and return
home I'll have those items installed. |
| |
|
Finally did some full throttle
acceleration with 650 miles on the car. The Type R VTEC is very addicting
due the power surge after 5,700 RPM. Once VTEC kicks in it only takes a moment
to reach the 8,400 RPM redline and then you shift gears and the fun continues! |
| |
|
After some driving around
town and the long 300 mile tip to school the car now has over 400 miles on
the odometer. I have resisted from going into VTEC due to the break in procedure
but the car feels rock solid. I'm surprised how much better it feels over
my modified GS-R. |
